"Submerged Motherland," an installation by the Brooklyn artist Swoon at the Brooklyn Museum |
If you get a chance, check out this cool installation at the Brooklyn Museum, which I saw yesterday. The piece was inspired by Hurricane Sandy, which flooded the artist's neighborhood and studio. The tree you see here is fifty feet tall and made out of strips of fabric. The leaves are cut out of paper and cast giant shadows on the walls and ceiling of a massive rotunda. Elsewhere in the installation there are reconstructed boats that have sailed down the Hudson River and Venetian canals (for the Venice Bienniale), large-scale figure drawings and a little cardboard hut. Really cool. And in the adjoining galleries is a huge retrospective of work by the Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. Worth the trip!
Wow, Shea. Way cool, indeed. I will make sure to visit the museum and experience this installation. Thank you for sharing with us. Here is also a great article with more pictures and an interview with the artist: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jaime-rojo-steven-harrington/swoon-brooklyn-museum_b_5115253.html
